METER AND BILLING UPDATE
Due to issues with equipment that transmits meter usage, WKUD has needed to estimate some customer bills. As these equipment issues have been addressed, WKUD is now adjusting some customers’ bills so that they reflect actual usage registered by the meter. In most cases this is a one-time adjustment, and most bills will return to normal on the next bill cycle and stay that way.

• WKUD meters are read by battery powered radio transmitters. Within the last year these batteries began to fail sooner than anticipated.
• The failure of batteries in the radio transmitters does not in any way affect the function of the meter, only the transmission of the meter readings.
• Failed meters were physically read by WKUD and reads were documented by photograph each month
• Due to the increasing number of read transmitters that failed over time, WKUD was not able to physically read all meters that did not transmit readings as normal.
• Meters that were not physically read by WKUD personnel were billed at an average use.
• The average use was calculated by using usage history on each customer’s account.
• Twelve months usage is the standard amount of time used to obtain a customer’s average.
• WKUD contracted a third party (Pedal Valves) to begin a meter change out program.
• When a customer receives a new meter the “out read” of the old meter is documented with a photograph of the read.
• The documented out reading is provided to WKUD billing and the customer is billed the usage shown on that meter.
• If the customer has been overbilled according to the “out read” compared to the estimated average use, a credit will be issued immediately to the customer’s WKUD account.
• If the customer has been underbilled according to the “out read” compared to the estimated average use, the difference will be billed to the customer’s account on the next bill cycle.
• All new meter read transmitters have a battery life of at least 12 years, eliminating any need to average a customer’s usage or manually read meters going forward.
WKUD and Pedal Valves employees have been working to make this process as easy as possible for our customers. We appreciate your patience and will continue to give our best effort until all meter changeouts have been completed.
